Our High School self contained classroom of Students Living with Learning Disabilities in the area of Reading is one that is gaining success each day. The range of students in the classroom are grades 9th and 10th graders. The ages range from 14 to 21 currently. The students are all living under near poverty level in the West side of Chicago. The students have difficulties in fluency, comprehension, and writing. Their executive functioning affects their ability to retain information. These students try so hard to gain better reading skills because they are aware that their previous grade school did nothing to help them. Each of the students I teach have the goal to attend a four year University. The students would highly benefit from having a quality curriculum for reading and writing. Once the students internalize the strategies they utilize them across multiple subjects.
