I teach middle school literacy intervention in a diverse Minnesota public school where nearly all students come from low-income households. My students are curious, funny, resilient learners with different strengths, interests, cultures, and experiences. In our classroom, we work to make reading feel safe, purposeful, and possible. My students receive targeted instruction to strengthen decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading confidence. I strive to meet each student where they are while offering age-respectful materials that help them see themselves as capable readers. With access to the right resources, my students can build the skills they need for school and discover the enjoyment and independence that reading can bring.
