My students come from a high poverty area and school. My students don't have a lot of opportunities to experience the worlds around them. Many of my students have never left the county boundaries so by reading books it builds more background knowledge of the world they live in. Many of my students have heard that they will not accomplish their dreams so why would they put extra effort into their schooling. By bringing in new reading materials students will be able to connect to what interests them, connect to the characters, and realize that their dreams can become a reality. In our school we have a program that allows students to bring home 2 books a year to keep and the students really treasure them. Some students can count on a single hand how many books they have in their home.
