This will be my first year teaching as a kindergarten teacher at Deneen School of Excellence. Deneen is a Chicago Public School in its fifth year of turnaround through the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) network. I had the privilege of training as a resident in the Chicago Teacher Residency program through AUSL. After completing my training at Deneen in a kindergarten classroom, I was hired at Deneen to be a full time teacher. I am so thrilled to start the school year. Deneen is located in the south side of Chicago. The student population is 97% low-income. Last year, every one of my students started the school year below grade level. Starting kindergarten already behind can be academically devastating for students. I am passionate about my students becoming college ready. By the end of the year, I want all of my students to be at or above grade level.
