I use advisory time to read different books aloud since research shows read aloud a help students with fluency and I wanted to expose to students to a wider range of books in hopes of inspiring them to become independent readers. At first, I was met with a sighs, but now I have students begging me to read and borrow the book so they can finish it. Problem is, I've already spent hundreds of dollars on books and can't afford anymore. I've created a list of books, journals and sporting goods for my students to earn with growth in their grades and more participation in class. These incentives will award good behavior and habits they need for high school as well as grow their reading level and set them up to defy statistics and close the achievement gap.
