Students today love to code! Micro Bits are mini programmable computers that students program by writing code on a separate device. They are great because the result is visual on the LED display and students also practice electrical engineering, connecting the Micro Bit to other devices, like motors, with wires and breadboards. With the 5th-grade, I'll introduce Micro Bits using "Micro Bits in Wonderland." This is a project guide that follows along with the book Alice in Wonderland and has a Micro Bit project for each chapter.
Linking coding projects to a novel will engage students in both technology and literature, developing a love for both! The project will build growth mindsets within students as they work through challenges. They will also practice teamwork as they support one another to make their code work as intended.
Recent studies have shown that using Micro Bits in the classroom increases engagement and confidence in computer science, with more students believing anyone can code.
Alice: This is impossible.
The Mad Hatter: Only if you believe it is.
