I am continuously striving to create an inviting classroom for all of my 7th grade students to feel safe to problem solve and collaborate with others. To create this environment, my classroom has physical features like low lights, a range of technology, displays of student work, and self-care items. I use game- and project-based learning strategies daily to keep my students engaged. I aim to show students that math doesn't need to be boring or hard. I have also recently increased my focus on social emotional learning through my own mini lessons and projects that address current issues within our classroom and school, such as low motivation, drama with family members, end-of-the-year frustration levels, and current events in the world. All of these strategies have created a space where students open up to me about their experiences, which in turn has created a more easily-managed and healthier classroom.
