Currently, I have minimal STEM-related activities in my classroom. However, I have noticed many students desire to engage with these materials during math centers, inside recess, and Fun Friday. During the pandemic, we have seen an increase in technology usage by students, such as using Chromebooks and iPads to complete assignments during distance learning. STEM bins would offer a hands-on, play-based learning opportunity. STEM bins are tubs filled with various sorts of manipulatives such as magnetic tiles, legos, pattern blocks, and dominoes. STEM bins allow students to engage in hands-on activities that promote creativity and critical thinking skills. These activities provide students with an open-ended exploration of various materials while also developing fine motor skills. Using the manipulatives, students are able to plan, design, create and modify a variety of products. While students have the opportunity to build inventions of their own design, they can also follow pre-made blueprints. Following the blueprint promotes students’ critical thinking and direction following skills. The STEM bins will be used during centers, inside recess, early finisher activities, and Fun Friday.
