I am hoping to attend the Breathe for Change professional development program this summer. This program will teach me how to implement yoga in my classroom along with a variety of mindfulness strategies to help my students with their social and emotional well-being.
My personal yoga practice changed my life and is beginning to change the environment of my classroom. I can only imagine the transformation that will happen when I can fully implement a researched-based program like Breathe For Change.
In a school like mine, which serves a low-income, minority population, teaching wellness sends a message to students that they matter in a world where a lot of forces are already making them feel like they don’t. Wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga empower students to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves. This gives them coping strategies to deal with many of the adult issues that first graders should never have to deal with.
There is a lot of trauma in our community. We have a growing population of refugees, and most of our students are living in poverty. Despite all this, my students are expected to come to school ready to learn each day.
As a teacher of students who are considered to be part of a high-risk demographic, I feel an urgent need to learn effective strategies that will help my students learn how to be the best humans they can be. I believe this program will help me empower my students to not only change themselves but also their community.
