My wonderful 67 students that I see each day come from a diverse number of backgrounds and resources. DeKalb county schools is the third largest school system in Georgia and is comprised of more than 88% non-white students. They speak over 142 different languages in our county. The student population represents more than 157 different countries and many refugee groups are based here. More than 71% of DeKalb's students receive free or reduced lunch. I am fortunate that in an elementary school of around 400 students, nearly 17% qualify for the gifted program. That is significantly higher than the national average of 3-5%. The school also has done a tremendous job of serving students with more than one exceptionality. I have students who have special ed services and ESOL services that are gifted, too. I love the beautiful picture of diversity and excellence my school represents.
