My group of students are honor students who are pretty serious about their education and work hard to do well in class. On the other hand, their knowledge of popular writers such as Toni Morrison, Ray Bradbury, and Walter Mosley, for example, is limited. When said writers are mentioned, they are curious to know more about what these authors have written. This group of students enjoy talking about literature and enjoy listening to each other's points of view. My school is a charter school located on the South side of Chicago. Our enrollment is about 507 9-12 students. Our population is 99% African American. Although our students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, 99% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our students come to us with low reading and writing levels, so at times reading and writing is a struggle.
