My students have a hard time trusting and believing someone is actually there for them to be better for themselves and to have a successful future. They have hard exteriors due to the many times people have told them they are not smart, or will not amount to anything. How can I come in and tell them they are the best, when they don't hear that about themselves that often, or at all because they have behaviors or are academically low compared to their same aged peers? My students come from diverse backgrounds in the U.S. and are trying to find themselves at our school in Alaska. The dynamics of my class from the beginning with these students is a challenge of trust and educating.
