BTech is a continuation school in a diverse urban setting. I am fortunate to work in a school district that supports libraries and promotes reading. Unfortunately for my students, they have had some very negative experiences with the rules of most libraries. They struggle with lacking an address so have no access to the public library. They lack library etiquette; borrow and return on time, quiet in the library space and knowing how to ask for help. But my students want to read. I often have students walk into my space, ask for a book, then exclaim at the selection saying, "Wow. These are the same as in Juvie."
If I can spark an interest in reading in each kid, no matter what the material, then I know I have captured a kid for life. Each book read equals another notch on the literacy meter. It's a success that few of my kids have had in their academic lives. Too often they feel most books are for "other people". When they see themselves in a book, they become committed to reading.
