My students are at-risk teens in the inner city of Detroit. The majority have substantial deficiencies in mathematics. What makes me the most sad about this, is the fact that they do not see that they are behind. They do not realize their counterparts in the suburbs who could one day be competing for the same job more likely have the proper skills to be successful in a professional work setting. This is solely based on their education, skills, and habits which means that all of this can be taught. My students can be successful in a competitive work-force, they are just going to need more nurturing and coaching along the way. I need as many resources as possible to provide a tailored learning environment for each student.
