My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. Many are second language learners, and many have experienced issues related to gangs. We have a reading program at our school that counts toward their grade in my English class. The students that I have for reading are able to check out my books and to their surprise they are starting to become true readers! However, my other classes are struggling. In one of my classes, this would probably be the first book that most of those kids have read and enjoyed in their entire lives. It would help their grades, and it would show them that all books are not boring. Also, it would help dissuade them from succumbing to the temptations of joining a gang that exist in their neighborhoods.
