I am a proponent of choice-based art education, regarding students as artists and offering them real choices for responding to their own ideas and interests through art making. My choice-based art program offers separate media centers (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, etc). These centers function as mini art studios, arranged to provide students with structured and independent learning opportunities. Each center is complete with instructional information, menus, materials, and tools. Artists move independently between centers, utilizing resources as needed in their art making. Artists at the introductory level are required to participate in the "grand opening" of each center in order to gain familiarity with tools and materials. Advanced levels are working toward more autonomous artistic behavior, generating ideas and choosing tools and materials that meet their needs.
