While, I'd like to make "3doodling" an option for lesson products across curricula, such as indigenous people's crafts for social studies, or manipulatives for math, we hope students get an opportunity to use these tools to create animals for our unit in life science. Students are doing "PBL" (Project Based Learning) in which the driving question is "How is adaptation essential to survival?" Moreover, the lesson unit requires students to create a new animal using what they know about adaptations, human and natural selection. They must create a model of the animal, and a separate model of its adaptation. Students must also be able to convert the size of the animal based on scale. Because 3d printing is measured in millimeters. Students will use a 1 mm to 1 foot ratio when considering how large to make their animals. Without the 3-D tools we are asking for, students will not have an opportunity to have a true STEAM experience bringing together science, tech, engineering, art and math. Drawing in traditional 2-D does not allow for engineering, and the artistic part of the project would not be as rich. While the kit only includes 12 pencils, we are rotating 80 students through 3 classes and during each class they have a rotation of activities. This allows us to use resources efficiently. I will also utilize the lessons throughout the year to create standard-aligned learning centers. By using these tools and skills regularly, they are building their understanding of concepts and practices necessary to reach their dreams of becoming 3-D graphic artists in fields ranging from architecture to video game programming.
