If there's one thing 5 year olds know, it's how to move. My students love to move around the room and work in various places. During independent work times, I believe it is important to allow students to sit where they can do their best work, whether that be on the floor or standing at a table. Some of the materials I requested will allow my students to easily work in a variety of places around the room. Stability balls and seat cushions will allow them to sit on the carpet more comfortably and wiggle around to release some energy while working. Clipboards will allow us to take our work outside and students will be able to work in a variety of places. Being able to offer my students more work spaces means being able to offer my students the chance to find where/how they can do their best work. Flexible seating means that students can work in places that best fit their needs. Along with being able to self regulate their work space, my Kindergarteners are learning how to regulate their emotions and behaviors. Being able to recognize, express, and regulate emotions is no easy feat - especially when you're 5. In my classroom we have a daily mindfulness lesson. These lessons can be anything from learning about feelings to role playing how to have positive interactions with peers. With an expanded library and mindful tools, like yoga cards, we can continue to learn about kindness, mindfulness, and how to regulate feelings. The stress balls are a great way to release any pent up frustrations and focus. Mindfulness allows my students to take charge of their emotions and behaviors so that they can focus on learning and being their best selves. Thank you for investing in my kids!
