I'm a teacher working in the Bronx in a 12:1:1 classroom setting. The children who I teach are generally classified as emotionally disturbed and learning disabled, but once a relationship has been created, you'll soon realize how funny, special and loving each student can be. I've found that if treated with respect, given reasonable behavior and academic expectations, and a chance to succeed, their self-esteem, as learners, grows so incredibly confident that one could forget why they required a self contained placement in the first place. Throughout the day we study all academic areas, and the curriculum is tailored to their learning needs. The students in the room do have their challenges, but if they are given the right support and tools to learn they are able to flourish into young men and women who aren't afraid to learn, make mistakes, and conquer challenges on their own.
