The requested novels are coming of age stories that address serious and meaningful issues my students face. The driving question for the 10th grade curriculum is "What do our stories tell about us?" I want my students to think about what it means to transition into adulthood and how those experiences will shape and inform their perspective and worldview. Because my students come from diverse backgrounds, these carefully selected novels represent a variety of relevant cultural experiences. City of Thieves, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The Bluest Eye, Persepolis, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower are coming of age stories that address the need to belong and understand one's identity and individuality. They are also captivating reads, which will hopefully engage my reluctant readers in a meaningful way. The texts' range in complexity also reflects the spectrum of reading abilities. I use the literature circle model for a novel study because it allows students to have choice in their learning and the opportunity to read something at their level without feeling embarrassed or inferior to other students. After I present each book with a quick "book trailer," students will chose the text that is the most appealing to them, and will read and discuss that novel in small groups throughout the unit. They will practice close reading strategies, discussion techniques, and clear and precise writing. Their final assignment will be a character essay, where they track the development of a character from the beginning to the end of the novel. They will get a chance to present their writing accomplishments to each other.
