We are out of writing notebooks and have new students coming in, including some from Puerto Rico. Also, the notebooks we began with did not have enough pages to carry us through the year. These composition books allow the students to have all of their writings accessible to them for reflection. They become a record of the detailed dialogue that I have with them about their free writing, which is our current focus, so that students will learn to think as they write. Peter Elbow and others believe that this method is the best way to improve student writing, as do I. Additionally, some referrals have been made to resources within the school because of what students have written, ensuring that more of their needs are being met.
