My school is an old high school just recently converted to a middle school last year. In a co-teaching position, I serve middle school students who show promise in academics and the arts in an area riddled with poverty, drugs, and violence. Many of these students bear burdens of adults who are unable to fulfill traditional parental duties. While a few do have support from home, "thuggish" peer pressure has a stronghold especially for the males. It is not uncommon for females to have mothers who play the role of friends and grandmothers who serve as mothers. Despite the conditions, I see the sparkles in my students' eyes and desires in their hearts to gain knowledge and form relationships with positive role models.
