I've been wanting to find a way to help out the struggling readers in my classroom. I believe that allowing these students the opportunity to listen to a book while they are actively following along would be wonderful way for them to gain confidence and in their reading ability. Hearing a book read on tape helps students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give an important introduction to listening — a skill that they must master in order to learn to read. These book are fun and of high interest for any 2nd grader. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Stone Soup, and the rest are treasured, classic books I know would help my struggling readers gain a true love of reading.
