The students that I teach range from poverty level to affluent with diverse cultural backgrounds. In the 1st grade, the major focus is learning to read and learning math facts. With out help at home, many will struggle with learning which will effect them from now on. Those that struggle tend to become "behavior" problems to cover their inadequacies. Students think that being bad is cooler then being "stupid". Stupidity has nothing to do with it. If you don't have the proper background and materials to learn with, how can you learn? I want to take those students and provide them with reading materials on their levels to excite them about reading. We all read and will until the day we die. Kids need to know that.
