I have a very diverse group of students, most of them are from non-English speaking homes and/or impoverished environments. They come to me from K-5 elementary schools with a limited array of scientific knowledge and experience. Almost every single one of my students struggles with reading comprehension. This impacts their learning in all academic classes. They do not receive adequate educational support at home, so it becomes a real challenge to help them adjust to middle school expectations regarding their workload and compliance with classroom routines. My school educates a population of about 1200 students with most of them coming from the types of environments I mentioned previously. My school tries very hard to implement free programs designed to support our student body, but it doesn't always result in the impact we intend these programs to have.
