These be books will be available to students to read as they choose. I will also read several aloud to the class and/or advertise them as books to be read. The book sets will be used for small guided-reading groups. These books will not only help me and my students start and carry on conversations about race, racism, our history, and our future- they will also help my diverse student body to see their own races and experiences reflected in our classroom literature. When students are able to use books as mirrors (reflecting their own experiences) as well as windows (showing them other perspectives) and sliding doors (allowing them the opportunity to experience new things and empathize with others), they're more likely to stay engaged in literacy and learning. In order to allow students to engage with texts in these ways, it's critical to have various genres of books written by diverse authors. Each of these books were carefully chosen with my diverse group of students AND the current Black Lives Matter Movement/Anti-Racist Revolution in mind.
