Over half of my students came into school lacking essentials like notebooks, folders, earphones to access audiobooks on our class computers. Our school is located in a low income area and we need some help starting our school year off with the right tools. My class needs notebooks and folders to use for homework assignments, interactive poems, word work, math and/or related services. I teach in first grade self-contained classroom, where students need resources to create meaningful learning experiences. To us, that means that content must: activate what they know, be interactive, and be interesting, all at once. For students who face a range of challenges daily, meaningful learning is far from conventional. I would like for my students to have interactive tools for Literacy and Math centers in order to stay engaged. I am a first year teacher in the age of technology in a classroom with a non-working SMARTboard and I fear our lack of classroom resources leave me unready to meet the needs of all individual learning styles. The WhisperPhone included would help me during small group conferencing with students who speak softly. A pair of students, who struggle with speech and language impairments, would also be able to use the WhisperPhones during reading workshop when students are asked to read with a buddy. The supplies requested above would build and hone their foundational skills, and with this project I continue to teach and show my class how much kindness matters!
