I teach in a school where 75 percent of our kids are so poor they do not have a balanced meal outside school. Most of these kids come to school tired from the many distractions that faced them before they arrived at school that day. They have heard mom and dad fighting all night, or the gun fire in the neighborhood, or a list of other disturbances to their life most of us could never imagine. Our school is their protected place in this neighborhood, where they can learn.
