These books are an integral part of a unit I plan to teach titled: Advanced Curriculum from Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth- Interactions in Ecology and Literature (Stambaugh, Fecht and Mofield).
This unit we will be using these books for is based on high-interest topics and incorporates depth and complexity while fully integrating ELA and science standards and concepts.
The Great Kapok Tree is the book that I will read aloud to introduce the concept that everything interacts.
The novel, The One and Only Ivan will be used as a novel study for the students. We will focus on the key question of: How does an author's use of character interaction develop the theme of the story?
The picture books The Other Side and Each Kindness will be used in a lesson to explore interactions through positive relationships.
Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla will be used in a lesson exploring interactions and change while considering the question: Should animals be kept outside or their natural habitats?
