Our school is a Title I campus, with many of our learners being English Language Learners or come from low-socioeconomic status homes. By having the STEAM devices and materials available to our learners, their academic vocabulary and concepts would grow through hands-on experiences in the makerspace environment. A skill gained through this project is the use of higher-order thinking skills, which challenges the learner to use their background knowledge and experiences to collaborate with peers on the lesson’s objective. Higher-order thinking skills allow the learner to demonstrate high levels of insight and make inferences on the lesson’s objectives and outcomes. The STEAM materials being presented in this project will provide learners the skills to integrate the cross-curricular concepts learned within all subject areas into the makerspace’s challenges and projects presented to them in the library. Our library is ready to transition into a 21st-century learning environment as our need for STEAM enrichment is essential in the success of our learners. The final goal of this project is to meet the social-emotional needs of the learners. The library is an environment that provides a safe and positive learning environment, where learners are given the opportunities to express their interests and ideas. This project will offer a wide variety of STEAM learning experiences to engage learners in innovative tasks while collaborating with peers.
