We are getting two guinea pigs as our classroom pets. Not only will my students be taught responsibility and proper animal care, but I can tie in the habitat and food web to our science unit on ecosystems. They have had experience with reptiles in their fourth grade classroom, and I see the value in their learning about mammals now that they are in fifth. The materials that we are in need of will help sustain our guinea pigs and keep them happy and healthy. Getting these supplies will show that having a pet is more than just giving them food and water. They need toys and items to enrich their lives, and having a pet should not be taken lightly. We can also tie in math by charting their growth as they get older, calculate the dimensions of their cage, predict how long a bag of their food will last and much more!
