As a new teacher, the idea of starting my classroom was a daunting task. I knew from my year of training in a similar classroom that there are essential certain items that I definitely needed this year. For instance, a globe would help my students see where they are in relation to every place they'd read about in our central texts. The highlighters and sticky notes would help them annotate complex texts and analyze them completely. And things like mailboxes would be perfect for classroom jobs, creating shared responsibility among us all. All of these supplies and more are included in my list because they're vital pieces that will work towards a classroom community that functions effectively for everyone involved--myself and the students. To some, these supplies may seem trivial or basic even. But for my students, they will set them up for a great start to this very important 8th grade year.
