Hello and welcome to my music classroom! At Southdale, music is something we are excited to explore and create. We use the Orff-Schulwerk process as our daily music pedagogy. Orff Schulwerk is a method of teaching music to children created by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman in the early 1900's. Orff and Keetman believed that children should experience music in every possible way and all music should start with a child's natural speech, body movement, and cultural folk songs. Children then learn to accompany themselves on the classroom instruments known as Orff instruments and eventually learn to improvise and compose. This process encourages creativity and focuses on how children learn best, through play! Orff Schulwerk has become an exciting way to encourage musical skills as well as academic skills and high level thinking and is the primary process of music education at Southdale Elementary.
