Several of the students on my English Learner caseload are new to the United States and come to school speaking fluent Spanish. They are eager to learn English and progress in their education and they have tremendous family support. One barrier to their success is access to quality reading materials at their level and in their native language.
These students love to read, but without books in their native language, their literacy skills can only take them so far. As the English Learner teacher at my school, I try to keep a well-stocked library of books in Spanish. Students can check out these books for use at school or at home. Many of my students devour the books, reading as many as ten books in one single week! They are hungry for more learning and these books will help them to improve their literacy skills in their native language. Research shows that a student's success in their first language will transfer to their success in learning English.
Many of my students' families also enjoy the Spanish library. When parents do not speak or read English, it makes it difficult for families to have quality reading time together. I allow them to check these books out of the English Learner library to read at home and return when they are finished with them. It has been a great way to ensure that all families are included in the ability to foster a love of reading at home.
In my English Learner library, I have many picture books, but I am lacking in engaging chapter books. The 36 chapter books on my wish list are funny, captivating, and interesting. I know my English Learner students will be so excited to get their hands on these wonderful texts!
