Our 3rd-grade classroom is a part of a Leader in Me, Arts & Humanities magnet school in Asheville, NC. From Day 1 we investigate how to solve problems together, how to make sense of different viewpoints, and plot our courses to become #changemakers in our community. We study a variety of local, national, and international leaders to identify leadership skills within ourselves and think critically about how we might best put our own unique skills to use. I am a member of our school's Social Justice League and it is important to me that I bring the work of that committee to my students in the form of Paidaiea Seminars, access to diverse books, and lessons aligned to the Teaching Tolerance Social Justice Standards. It is my hope that students leave my classroom feeling valued, represented, and empowered.
