When we are working on literacy and math centers, the student leader of the day needs to be able to gather supplies, lead the group, and clean up independently. The teacher is working separately to optimize guided groups to make sure each student receives time to work on reading, phonics, or other specific skills. The shelving in the classroom is built in and too high for the students to reach. A lack of organization makes students dependent on the teacher for all needs to facilitate this learning opportunity. By providing this essential need to these students, you are providing an opportunity for students to learn self-dependency and responsibility.
