My students attend a school in an ethnically diverse area of South Philadelphia, and many of them are from families of immigrants. They are repositories of cultural knowledge and traditions. They are readers, and through reading, they become fascinated by the wonders of our world. My students are writers. They are exploring the significance of their words and the power of having a voice. I am proud that they want to become active citizens who participate in making their school and community a better place. We are creating a classroom community that values the joy and the spontaneous sparks that come from authentic learning, and fostering the awareness that each child has gifts to share with the world.
