Our school is a large urban high school with a high poverty rate on the south side of Chicago. That said, our school environment in general makes students feel as though they are an integral and necessary part of this community. Students feel safe and secure in order to accomplish academic rigor and excellence. Because of the social ills that have affected our students during their elementary school histories, the RLA students come to us with dramatically low reading skills. Regardless of their pasts, our students adapt well and are extremely resilient. With the right guidance (teacher who cares, materials that they find engaging, concrete goals for the future), I am fully confident that each one of my students can become not only a better reader, but develop a hunger for knowledge that will continue to expand exponentially in the future.
