My students live in a rural community in North Carolina. Many families farm as their source of income. There are roughly 465 students in my school with a student to teacher ratio of 20:1. We are considered a Title 1 school which means more than 1/2 of our students get free or reduced lunch. We are generally Top 3 in our county with our test scores in Reading and Math, however our Science scores were less than 80%, which was in the lower half of the county. There are some discipline problems, but overall we have a good, hardworking group of children that would love the chance to work hands-on with new science materials. After speaking with several teachers that gave the Science End of Grade Test, I came to the realization that many students were not exposed to science concepts, resulting in some not passing the EOG test. Starting at the Kindergarten level, the items that I am asking for will introduce students to weight, rocks, and matter and allow them to explore each as inquiry.
