My middle school science students (grades 5–8) attend an urban community school with sibling‑preference enrollment and a predominantly low‑income population, with 95% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. They represent a diverse MLL community with six identified home languages. Due to optional and inconsistent elementary science instruction, many arrive in middle school with significant gaps in science literacy, vocabulary, and foundational knowledge. As the school’s only direct science instructor, I work intentionally to bridge these gaps by providing consistent exposure to core concepts, hands‑on inquiry, and literacy‑rich, accessible instruction that builds confidence, curiosity, and equitable access to high‑quality science learning.
