My class is a kindergarten to sixth grade Special Day Class for students with Autism on a public elementary school campus in California. Up until this year, my students and I have been on a segregated campus for students with severe special needs. Last spring, we received approval to move our class to a local public elementary school. Since arriving at our new school, our students have flourished. For the first time, they have peer role models and friends. By being themselves, they inspire the students around them to learn about autism and to be kind and patient friends. My students currently range in age from first to fifth grade. Some are nonverbal while others are marginally verbal. They all use the Picture Exchange Communication System to form language. Despite having difficulty forming thoughts, they all have a lot to say. I have a fun and spirited class. Despite learning difficulties, my students welcome challenge and love success. Their hard work is inspirational.
