Every student in my class is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. I teach in a third through fifth grade self contained DHH classroom. Many of my students are also from low income families. Literacy is the biggest challenge. The average deaf high school student graduates with a fourth grade reading level. Reading comprehension, literacy, and overall academic achievement are well below their hearing peers. Despite our challenges, though, we do everything we can to be the best we can be!
