I teach seventh grade students in a rural town where the child poverty rate in the year 2000 was 18.3% compared to the state's child poverty rate of 15.7%. In 2008, the unemployment rate was 8% compared to the state's rate of 6.6%. In the past 7 years our Hispanic population has increased by 27%.
