My art students attend a K-6 public charter school in a major city in Massachusetts. Our charter school is unique in that it is one of the few elementary schools in the urban area that still offers classes in the arts. My students come from highly impoverished neighborhoods and housing projects throughout the city, with 73% of students qualifying for free meals. Many students and their families have opted to attend our charter school because of its enrichment opportunities in the arts, as well as its safe location and nurturing environment. The fact that our students come from different neighborhoods throughout the entire city makes our school a highly integrated and diverse community of learners. I teach students in grades K-6 the elements and principles of visual art. I aspire to expose my young art students to as many different mediums and techniques as I can, while they develop their own personal artistic styles.
