My students are children of military families who receive special education services of speech/language therapy to address an articulation disorder. An articulation disorder is the inability to correctly produce speech sounds (phonemes) because of imprecise placement, timing, pressure, speed, or flow of movement of the lips, tongue, or throat. Students who have difficulty producing speech sounds correctly: omit sounds ("pay" for "play"), distort sounds ("ship" for "sip"), or substitute ("wock" for "rock") sounds. The inability to correctly produce speech sounds can also be due to problems such as cleft palate, orthodontic issues or muscle weakness such as dysarthria. Students with articulation problems often have difficulties discriminating sounds which affect their academic progress and affect them socially due to their inability to be understood.
