Literacy is more important now than ever. Even elementary state math testing is word-based! During the process of earning my Master of Music degree, I was certified in a folksong-based teaching method called Kodály. Zoltán Kodåly was a Hungarian music educator who discovered teaching music through children's songs was one of the best ways to develop a child's singing voice. Folksongs have a limited vocal range, include simple rhythms, and include appropriate, elementary grade language. "Sing Me A Story" would consist of high school choral students singing illustrated folksong books; connecting easy to sing music with elementary sight words. We are looking for financial help to purchase six copies of each book to donate to each of our elementary schools (five schools and one book for us). My high school choral students would create a video teaching the song and then sing along as they show the illustrations and text in the books. We create a website so that elementary students could check out the book and sing along at home. Teachers could also access the videos to use in their classroom. Many of the books align with seasonal and conceptual curricula. The majority of the books selected are of a special series by elementary music professor, John Feierabend. John selects one folk song every year and brings the lyrics to a school of art in NY where the entire class submits their illustrated take on the text. Feierabend then selects one book to have published. The art student graduates with an already published work. This project is a win-win for everyone! We have the potential to reach hundreds of students. Folksongs are passed from generation. I'm excited to teach the next generation songs that my parents and grandparents used to sing to me.
