There is a value to students reading classics. The easy part of that is most classics are included in textbooks. While textbooks are offering more and more modern and diverse authors, our class sets are still older books. The theme of books like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry are extremely important, but those students may gain far more from The House on Mango Street and are far more likely to relate to it. Students are often encouraged to read beyond the class when they begin with the first book of a series. Knowing that the story continues can be very encouraging to get students to read even more. We'd like to update some of our class sets of books for our novel studies into books that are more likely to get students reading, not just for class, but hopefully beyond it as well.
