One of the most important ways a teacher can motivate students to commit to their own learning is to find high-interest teaching materials that capture their imaginations. The novel The Five People You Meet In Heaven by award-winning author and journalist Mitch Albom will do just that for my seniors. This novel delves into ideas of human connection, forgiveness, sacrifice, love, and redemption in ways that capture the interest of students. It follows the life of Eddie who confronts many obstacles in life and then learns valuable lessons in death. Through this novel, my students will be able to meet many important state standards, including the ability to evaluate, compare and contrast, and analyze literary elements such as theme and symbol. This book will easily meet those requirements as well as provide for higher order thinking as students make connections to their own lives and stories of the people around them. Everyone has a story, and everyone has a purpose. This book might just help students realize their own.
