Physical movement in our youth is waning in thistechnological world. Fewer kids are playing outside, but rather spending time indoors to play video games. My hope is to change this a bit by focusing on a project-based learning activity about the Iditarod race. Students will learn about the Iditarod race by incorporating geography, mathematics, research skills, and physical movement. The Iditarod is an annual dog sled race in Alaska. Our students will research and choose a dog sled team and will follow that team throughout the race by tracking their movement and status. Students will wear a pedometer each day to track their steps. These steps will translate into distance traveled on our makeshift map. Adding a physical movement component will not only encourage our students to move, but will enhance their learning as well. The race is on to the finish line!
