For new language learners, all of the vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation can be daunting at first, and become overwhelming, tiring, and frustrating over time. Students need breaks from the mechanics of the language itself to enjoy the cultures the language comes from. One of the easiest ways to introduce students to a culture, is through its food. Not only by eating this food, but by learning how it's made, and trying to make it themselves. A lot of festivities in France involve eating crepes, which are relatively easy to make, and fun to eat. I have wished, as each holiday went by, that I could have students learn to make crepes in class, as I did in my French class in high school. Just this last week, on February second, was a very big French crepe holiday (la chandeleur) that I didn't want the students to miss. So I made all of the crepes at home and brought them to class. And as the students ate, I overheard them saying to each other, how cool would it be if we could make these ourselves in class though...
